    2006-2007 Impact Grant Recipients

Read to Me - Bob Curtain
During the summer of 2006, Bob Curtain recorded leveled books from Christina Huddleston Elementary and Orchard Lake Elementary on CDs. They are available in the guided reader checkout area. Listening to books develops phonemic awareness, a strong indicator of a child's future reading success. The program also included funding for supplies and a translator to facilitate a Fall 2006 English Language Learner (ELL) parent meeting. Measurement of success will be done using MCA and TEAE reading scores.

Schools Attuned Training - Theresa Beissel and Sara Wren
Staff from Oak Hills Elementary and McGuire Middle School attended Schools Attuned On-Demand: A Program of "All Kinds of Minds" during the summer of 2006. This training provided focused study on eight neurodevelopmental constructs that affect learning. Trained staff will apply this study to enhance their individual teaching styles and methods while instilling greater tolerance for differences in learning. After training, this will be implemented in the teacher's classroom and shared with fellow teachers at the building level.

Audio in Action - Sheri Sergent
Kenwood Trail Middle School library received audio CD books and novels. Students in need of non-traditional ways to access books for coursework now have an alternative resource to improve reading comprehension and increase vocabulary.

Reading and Relaxation with Animals - Holly Ryan
Kenwood Trail Middle School students in the Level III special education program, Making a Positive Difference (MAPD), needed targeted assistance necessary to improve their reading skills. This program recognizes the human-animal bond as a tool to achieve reading success. Funds are provided for reading dog expenses, including animal consultants, sanitary considerations, blankets, and treats for weekly student-dog reading sessions from October to May.

J.I.M. Jump Into Math - Scott Sherman
Eastview Elementary School plans to increase basic math facts ability by building a program focused on automaticity. Mr. Sherman will create bins of math activities and manipulatives for each grade level, introduce bins to staff, and evaluate the program using pre and post test evaluations of math facts.

McGuire School-wide Vocabulary Program - Penny Judson
McGuire Middle School is getting thirteen biweekly school-wide vocabulary lessons that focus on words with a common prefix or root. This program is for the entire student body, everyone studying the same words at the same time. The program promotes use of these words throughout the week followed by an end of week quiz that focuses on structural analysis, context cues, synonyms and antonyms and giving examples. Review of words studied to date takes place three times a year. MCAII reading scores for each grade level will be used to measure success.

Differentiated Instruction Course Design - Holly Traub
Eastview Elementary School's Gifted Education Specialist will collaborate with a peer at Hamline University to design a graduate level course tailored to the specific needs of Lakeville Area Public Schools in the area of classroom differentiation and gifted education issues. This in-district class will be targeted to 1st through 5th grade classroom teachers and offered in the fall of 2006 to district staff with similar pricing and credit structures as the presently offered in-district classes.

Cognitively Guided Instruction - Jenney Enright
Funds will cover one team (6) of teachers at Eastview Elementary School to attend Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) training. CGI is a researched based program that uses a child's intuitive knowledge to engage him/her in building problem solving strategies. The goal is to incorporate this style of teaching into math instruction and raise the student achievement level. CGI training provides a framework for teachers to assess children's thinking about whole number math and provide a roadmap to develop increasingly complex problem solving ability over time.

Classroom Junior Great Books Program - Grace Trewick
Ms. Trewick will extend the Junior Great Books Shared Inquiry Method of Reading and Discussion from the high-achieving students to all of her classroom students. This grant will fund Junior Great Books materials and training for two (2) second grade teachers at Eastview Elementary School.
